The plagues sent upon Egypt had come to their climax with the tenth one – the death of all Egypt’s firstborn, while the Israelites had been spared. Broken at last, Pharaoh told them to get out of his nation, which the Israelites quickly did. Human reasoning would have taken them the quickest route to Canaan, their Promised Land, along the coastal road—a journey of around 10 days. But contrary to all human reasoning, God led them south by the desert road towards the Red Sea.
